Hanging down light

Image
Here is one thing, that you will commonly see in older shop houses or homes. This hanging down light is very eye attracting and sometimes they do come with their down shades. When I was a kid, I always admire at this wonderful beauty of this down lamp. Back then, there was a bulb install in it and the bakelite switch connecting the current to this unit wasn't taken out yet. The reason why this light holder is brought downwards is to maximize the surrounding lightning and also avoid shinning to the other room next door. Those bulb used previously was those filament 2 leg bulbs which commonly comes in 40 watts and 80 watts. These filament bulbs are very rare to get these days as the fitting is different from the modern E27 light bulb holder.  If you would like to decorate your house with these old bulb settings, do make sure that you have the correct bulb for the correct fitting. If not, you have to get an adapter for the older bulbs and it can be found online at Lazada.

Vintage 90s landline telephone

Image
Here is a small collection of vintage 90s landline Malaysia telephone. Telekom Malaysia is Malaysia national telco for landline all the time.    These phones were from Telekom Malaysia and each of them were built with their own unique serial number.  Below are some of the models and variants of Telekom Malaysia landline phone from the 90s. When I see all these old telephones, it reminds me about my past as I have a lot of happy moments with this telephone. I remember when I was young, I will always play with the curled rubber insulated telephone wires. These wires will keep all my boredom away as I will spend most of my time trying to straighten the curled wires which turns out to curled back again. Another interesting fact about these old telephones is that it doesn't have any display to show who the caller is. We always have that exciting hope hoping that when the phone rings, that call is from our girlfriends or boyfriends or even our BFF call. Then we will spend ...

Vintage plastic sockets

Image
Plastic sockets like these are one of its kind as it is made specially to be attached on wood bases. These sockets are commonly found in old wooden shop houses and some older homes built in the 70s and earlier. These sockets are actually successor to its predecessor, the bakelite sockets. They are made available in white colour which are more clearer to be seen at night unlike those black bakelite switches and sockets. My dad told me a joke that when a mosquito land on those black bakelite sockets and switches, you are unable to see those flying creatures hiding in your house. These plastic sockets are also much stronger too as it won't break that easy when you dropped it. But over time, yellowish aging spots will start to appear on those plastic sockets and heat will accelerate the yellowish stains to happen at a faster rate. One hack tool which you can use to polish these sockets is using toothpaste to make it white and shinny again. This socket can support up to 250 voltage and ...

Water heater change the way, how people shower as people in the past used to shower with cold water most of the time. Now we have the comfort of hot water shower and it is available to us in the most convenient way. The body of the national hot water heater is made from plastic and it use to be white in colour but as time pass, the colour has changed to be yellowish. This is a sharing only regarding about how old water heater looks like in the past 20 years.  No one wants to display a set of water heater in their display corner, therefore these vintage water heater are not commonly use as collectible items.

Vintage Davis LCD Projector

This projector can still work on all computers including window 10 if you have a VGA connector. You won't need a driver for this projector as it is a plug and use version. Overall, the quality of this projector is still very high and this unit is still working until today. This projector are the modern type that are commonly use in office and home theatre.  These LCD projector is the successor of the overhead projector and the Kodak photo projector. This projector cost thousands of dollars when they first came out in the market and it is really a luxury to own them as a home theater system back then. Here are the details regarding this Davis projec...

These purple head connection wires (PS/2) have a made a disappearing in the year 2008. These days, USB keyboard are widely used. Here is a vintage Compaq keyboard from the year 1997. Compaq keyboards back in the past are quite troublesome as not all models can be compatible for non-Compaq desktop. Back in the past when buying old computer keyboard, you will not forget that it always comes with a CD for instructions and the driver for the installation of the keyboard software (For older PC)

Vintage Compaq computer monitor

Image
For computer users, I bet that some of you may grew up using computer monitor that looks exactly like this. I was one of them who use this kind of old monitor before for gaming. I always remember the brightness of this monitor is super killing bright and that you have to rest your eyes are using it for quite some time. This monitor is made in 1997 in China for Compaq Malaysia. Besides the monitor, Compaq computer accessories are quite troublesome as you may need a driver to install their software. Mostly Compaq devices in the past are only compatible with their own brand items. This monitor is surprising still in good working condition despite the yellowish aging stains. Cathode ray monitor are known to consumer a lot of electricity unlike LCD and LED ones. This monitor is about 6.7 Kilograms in weight. This Compaq monitor is able to support Window 7 computer without any problems so far, but I have tested on Windows 10 yet. If you are a retro computer gamer, this item is highly ...

Vintage NEMC fan

Image
This is a NEMC brand fan which is commonly used  in the household of Malaysia houses back in the 70s and the 80s. NEMC fan are much cheaper as compared with other ceiling fan brand like Mitsubishi, KDK and National. This brand isn't rare at all as NEMC fans are all made in Malaysia in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan state which is almost an hour drive from Kuala Lumpur city. This is a 60-inch (152 cm) diameter fan and it supports up to 5 speed. The cool air is generated by a 90-watt motor. Too bad, I didn't have much details regarding this fan as my aunt can't recall the information about this fan as it was installed in her shop many decades ago. This fan have been coated with a layer of green colour paint due to the ever comeback of rust back then. Collecting old fan can be troublesome as you will need to change the bearing in the motor from time to time. The heating up of motor for old model fan like this is very common back then as the blades of the fan are extra heavy...

Vintage Sanyo table fan

Image
Vintage table fans are also hot collectibles for retro theme home or cafe. These fans are functional and can be used as a 2 in 1, where it serves the purpose of cooling the place and also act as a display item. It is quite rare to find a fully working condition table like this on Carousell platform or elsewhere. Mostly you will see those GEC or GE fans which are made from brass sold widely on Carousell and I would say those fans are beautiful and worth collecting. This fan is from the year 1979 by Sanyo. This fan still works even until today with constant oiling and maintenance done by my lovely dad. The blade of this vintage fan is made from hard plastic and it comes in different colours. I remember seeing blue and pink coloured blades before. Retro fan like this, do heats up easily. As you can see, there is no air ventilation for the motors to receive the cool air unlike modern table fans today. Once the motor heats up, the oil on the shaft holding the fan blade get...

Vintage mulitmedia card

Image
Here is an old school multimedia card from the year 2001 which was a gift given by a friend of mine. These days, multimedia card are being replace with SD card which are way smaller in size and is more compatible will all electronic devices like laptop, smartphones and tablets. Multimedia card (MMC) have a nominal voltage of 3.3 volts and also have a maximum capacity of 512 GB. MMC was first introduced back in the year 1997 with a memory capacity of 4 MB (If I am not wrong.....) Window 98 computers were the first batch of computers to actually use these MMC as a temporary memory storage. MMC functions like a flash drive but it is mostly use for cameras and micro MMC are later developed to be compatible for handphones later in the late 2000s. In today's world you can't really store much with 32 MB storage, maybe a few photos ?? Back in 2006, I remember that my Window XP computer have a storage drive of 80 GB and it was reaally huge size back then. As the years ...

Denon DP-29F

Image
Always wanted to own a record player ?? Now everyone can own one because of this entry level, Denon DP-29F which have good functions and it is available at a good price. I bought mine for 100 Singapore Dollars on the online Carousell platform. When I bought it, I was very excited to see the performance of this modern record player which I have spent most of my time researching about it. This player comes with a hydraulic arm that lifts up and down the tone arm. For modern record players, there isn't any counterweight or weight for balancing the tone arm. This record player is design specially for records with a common thickness. The playable speed of this record player is 33.33 rpm and 45 rpm. One interesting thing about this turntable is that, it is super light in weight at 3.5 kilograms only !!! Besides that, this record player have an auto player function which includes the auto return function where the tone arm will arrive back at it's rest place after finishin...

Vintage bakelite socket

Image
Discovered that there are only 2 of this original black colour MK brand bakelite sockets remaining at my grandma's shop. These switches have been in the shop for the longest period of the time and it has not been replaced by any modern white plastic switches at all. These sockets must be attached by screw to a wooden block of wood before it is screwed on the walls. Normally these switches and sockets are use for old wooden houses and sometimes for brick houses too. These bakelite sockets are often found in houses which were built before the 60s Not many people like these kind of bakelite sockets because it is normally black in colour and those white bakelite sockets often turn yellowish over time. These bakelite sockets often breaks easily if you dont handle with care. The screw trade of these bakelite sockets do break easily if you keep on screwing and unscrewing the screw. Speaking of screw, these screws which are used in these sockets are known as inches screw where...

Vintage rice cooker pot

Image
Kept for more than 25 years or maybe longer than that, this piece serve as a good collector item and also a home appliances which can still function normally. This is a Toshiba brand rice cooker and it is originally made in Japan at that time. It is definitely lovely to see those Japanese branded vintage items that were originally made in Japan. Nowadays it is hard to find Japanese electronic brands which were made in their own home country. I was very attracted to the old fashion vintage cotton covered wires which is already extinct from today's electronic industry. Today, every electrical wires are using rubber coated wires which are more safe as compared to cotton covered wires which were used in the past. I will be sharing more about cotton covered wires in my next post in the future. Back in a few months ago, my mum tested this vintage rice cooker and everything works very well. She tested it by boiling some rice and all the rice inside the pot were well cooked. ...

Vintage Sanyo wall fan

Image
Wall fans are less popular in most parts of the world because the air circulation speed is much lesser as compared to ceiling fans. Here is one Sanyo wall fan. This is an early 1980s piece which was built 100% in Japan. The beautiful pink colour of this fan blade had been worn out due to long exposure to the sun. In fact, this was the original fan blade and it has not changed once it was bought. There is also a spare fan blade for this which my grandfather kept it. This wall fan is facing the evening west sun and this there are a lot of colour wearing out and also small broken parts. As you can see clearly, there is a broken part on the plastic front cage. This fan is also missing its other pull switch rope which function to trigger the fan to oscillate from right to left. The numbering on the fan speed scale have also been worned out too. It is quite a bit costly to repair these kind of fans these days because there is no more spare parts already. Especially the fan blade ...

Vintage USHA fan

Image
This fan was originally bought in 1946 right after world war 2, when my great grandma bought the shop. I believe that time, after the war broke out, many of the shops when through renovations and many of them were rebuilt back again. So that is how I predict the age and the year of this fan. This fan is placed in the living room upstairs of the old shop. Having a ceiling fan like this was really a luxury in the past, as many couldn't afford it. The most common brand ceiling fan in the 40s were GEC fan. USHA is a cheaper version of the GEC fan as it is made in India. The quality of the USHA fan is as good as the quality of the GEC fan. This fan ball bearing have not been changed for about 40 years and it is still in good working condition. The fan can still spin at max speed without making any noise. Whereas for the fan regulator, a GEC regulator was being used to replace the old USHA regulator. After searching in the store room at the old shop, I found this old regulato...

VHS player

Image
How many of you out there still remember the VHS ? I bet some of you could remember !!! For me, I remember it is quite troublesome to use the VHS player as you need to clean the heads of the tape and player heads from time to time. I found this player in my aunt's old shop. Condition is new and it is not been used at all. It comes with the original box too. Sadly, the box is not in a very good shape as there was another box on top of this box. But over time, I believe not using the VHS players will actually bring in problems to the player itself. This VHS player have been left in the box for many years. Easily I think, this model is about 25 years old. This player also comes with a remote control, RCA wire and also an original manual. Without waiting, my curiosity brought me to another level to test out the product. First, I opened up the player to check whether are there any rust or dust inside before plugging it to an electrical plug. To my surprise...
