Vintage mulitmedia card

Image
Here is an old school multimedia card from the year 2001 which was a gift given by a friend of mine. These days, multimedia card are being replace with SD card which are way smaller in size and is more compatible will all electronic devices like laptop, smartphones and tablets. Multimedia card (MMC) have a nominal voltage of 3.3 volts and also have a maximum capacity of 512 GB. MMC was first introduced back in the year 1997 with a memory capacity of 4 MB (If I am not wrong.....) Window 98 computers were the first batch of computers to actually use these MMC as a temporary memory storage. MMC functions like a flash drive but it is mostly use for cameras and micro MMC are later developed to be compatible for handphones later in the late 2000s. In today's world you can't really store much with 32 MB storage, maybe a few photos ?? Back in 2006, I remember that my Window XP computer have a storage drive of 80 GB and it was reaally huge size back then. As the years

Vintage Gas Igniter

Image
Spark-L is the model for this vintage Milux brand gas igniter. According to my mum, she had been using this vintage gas igniter for the past 30 years and it is still working well despite being covered in brownish-red rust. Unlike other models, this is a friction operated type with kerosene filling inside. Newer models of gas igniter uses batteries, flints and fuses to light this pistol up. The operation mechanism is super simple, just pull the trigger with a finger and there you go. The length is 26 cm and have a width of 10 cm wide. This gas igniter is used for older cooking stove without the spark lightning mechanism like this one here in the photo above. Soon, this would become a forgettable item as gas stove are becoming rarer as new technology has surpassed this old fashion kind.

Vintage Kuali cover

Image
The word "kuali" is a Malay term for wok and that word is commonly used in Malaysia and Singapore. Based on my experience, kuali cover are very long lasting household appliances and there are many of them in the market. This vintage one is made from Aluminium material with a little small hole at the bottom of the piece for hot steam to escape. My grandma choose not to change this kuali cover as it has been with her for the past 60 years. I measured that this kuali cover is almost the same size as those sold today at a measurement of 33 cm in diameter. One thing that attracts me the most is the protection handle which is made from bamboo and this really shows that it is a real vintage item. The handle of modern covers is made from hard plastic which can withstand high temperatures. One thing I notice about modern kuali covers is that it is made from stainless steel and they are much heavier in weight. That means, it is a very good thing as it won't get ou

Image
French toast, sounds familiar ?? Is it a food ?? Certianly, yes !!! But this card is not about the frenchtoast that you eat but a name of a language centre here in Singapore. Vintage Ovaltine Jar

Image
Vintage Ovaltine items are good starters for beginner vintage collectors. Even back in the past, people do enjoy collecting these Ovaltine items especially when it is given as a free item when you make a purchase of their products. When visiting musuem, I really do enjoy looking at the display of these collectibles from famous beverage brands like Nestle, Ovaltine and Coca Cola and ever dream of owning a collection like this Just a few days ago, a friend of mine decided to give me this old school Ovaltine Jar as he is moving out from his old house. I felt blessed by this kind friend of mine who knew I enjoy keeping vintage items and decided to give away instead. This piece here is extremely beautiful and it is worth displaying it. This milk jar is most likely to be from the early 80s where that brand is still quite popular back then before the famous chocolate malt drink, Milo began to grow and become more famous. Today the brand Ovaltine is less popular in Singapore

Vintage toolbox

Image
This is a light duty toolbox used by my grandfather back in his younger days. When I first opened, I discover a lot of vintage tools like inches screw drivers, spanner and many more old tools. Those tools are very rare to be found these days and it is worth keeping them just in case I will need them in the future for other restoration projects. The toolbox is a very stiff when I open it. At first, I struggle quite a lot in opening the box, but with the help of WD-40, I was able to open it easily. The joints of the box got smoothen along the way. There is also a presence of rust coated on this piece here. For your information, the brand of this toolbox is Wilde, and it is made in USA.

Denon DP-29F

Image
Always wanted to own a record player ?? Now everyone can own one because of this entry level, Denon DP-29F which have good functions and it is available at a good price. I bought mine for 100 Singapore Dollars on the online Carousell platform. When I bought it, I was very excited to see the performance of this modern record player which I have spent most of my time researching about it. This player comes with a hydraulic arm that lifts up and down the tone arm. For modern record players, there isn't any counterweight or weight for balancing the tone arm. This record player is design specially for records with a common thickness. The playable speed of this record player is 33.33 rpm and 45 rpm. One interesting thing about this turntable is that, it is super light in weight at 3.5 kilograms only !!! Besides that, this record player have an auto player function which includes the auto return function where the tone arm will arrive back at it's rest place after finishin

Vintage Aluminium Kettle

Image
Here is an old school aluminium kettle believed to be from the 50s to the early 70s. I can picture in my head about this kettle being placed over the charcoal stove. Kettle like this can be great collectible and display item too. It is very hard to find a kettle like this which is made from Aluminium these days as the material price is expensive these days. Therefore, stainless steel becomes a suitable option and a good substituent for aluminium. My mum shared with me her experience using this kettle as she used to boil lemon juice for the workers at my grandmother's charcoal shop. My mum used to have a larger kettle which can hold 7 litres of water unlike this smaller one, that can only hold about 5.5 litres and have a diameter of 22 cm. Kettle like this are long lasting and you could even find some of them are being used today. The only part that would wear out and break is the black plastic grip on the handle of the aluminium kettle. The trends of boiling water over

Vintage Tiffin Carrier

Tiffin carrier like this are hot collectibles items among vintage collectors today. Some good condition and beautiful ones can fetch up to 500 Singapore dollars !!! When I heard that, I was really amazed about it and even saw that it is very beautifully hand painted. Tiffin carrier in Asian countries comes in many different paintings designs and colours. Besides the design, tiffin carrier is also made differently using various materials like aluminium, brass, enamel, stainless steel and even porcelain. The common word used to describe these tiffin carrier is the Malay word "tingkat" which means storey. This is because there are many tiers (storey) on each tiffin carrier which best describe it. Some tiffin comes in many tiers and some even have just 2 tiers. The most commonly seen is 3 to 4 tiers. Vintage Hokkien Wedding basket

Image
In Malay language, this basket is known as Bakul Sia and it is commonly used during Baba Nyona and sometimes traditional Chinese wedding. This kind of basket is used by the bridegroom family to carry gifts which includes food and gift in the form of money to the bride family. Back in the past, red packets were not used for passing money during wedding ceremony unlike today. The actions of giving gifts using money is known as Mas Kahwin in Malay. In return, the bridegroom will usually return a portion of the gifts and this is done by the bridegroom family which signify goodwill. This basket belongs to my grandmother who got married in 1955. This basket here is very carefully preserved and taken care of. One thing that attracts me the most about this basket is that it is hand painted beautifully and I really admire the art work on this basket. According to my grandma, the trick to preserve basket like this is to properly wrap in a few layers of black opaque plastic and p

The person behind this blog

Image
Greetings to my fellow readers, for those who are new to my blogspot, I would be delight to give my warmest welcome to you. I am Jonathan Yee, the young man who have been spending his time researching and sharing information regarding these vintage items listed here. I am a passionate vintage collector who have been collecting vintage items at a young age of 15 years old. My hobby all started when I first learned the importance of maintaining a heritage back then in secondary school. What also supports me to collect vintage items is, I like the beautiful design of them as I can use those items to make a retro theme room. I started my hobby first with collecting stamps and coins. As the time past, I began to collect other items like vintage glass, enamelware and vinyl records. I also took up challenges on repairing and restoring vintage items. One recent restoration work which I did was restoring a broken record player where it have problems with the phono cartridge an

Postcard from Redbull

Image
Well, an invitation card like this is rare to come by these days. Companies around the globe decided to reduced cost on advertisement and all of them decided to perform it online. This is an invitation card to promote a flugtag event organised by Redbull, Singapore back in 2012. Bottom of the card shows the list of companies sponsoring the event. At the back of the card, it is for people to write message to their friends and invite them for that event.

Changi sailing club postcard

Image
As seen, it shows a beautifully picture taken at Changi waterfront that features a mixture of sunset and a partial dark sky. I really like the photo taken as it was done very professionally. This card aims at promoting youths to join their sailing club back then. There is information about this hobby club at the back of the card. Nowadays, promoting in Facebook is much faster and more effective and promoting using postcards are extinct these days. I hope that the culture of promoting using postcard will be back alive again.

Vintage Butane Lamp

Image
According to my aunt, this butane lamp is often used at my grandmother's shop back in the 70s before long fluorescence tube were installed in various location in the shop. Another reason why my grandparents used this butane lamp, was because of convenience and also a spare light source in case of current breakdown. Besides the remaining lamp, there are also other remaining butane gas cylinder which are unused. These butane lamp have a needle tube underneath the burner, which functions to poke a hole in the gas cylinder for butane gas to flow upwards. Once the gas cylinder has been poked, the entire gas cylinder must be used up to it's emptiness before you can safely remove it. Below shows the image of the type of butane gas tank use for this butane lamp. Every single time you start a fire in the lamp, you must always replace the burn out wig inside the burner. Nowadays, those wig are very hard to be found as there are measurements to it, as different wig differs in

Christmas card

Image
Definitely we will received card like this every year without fail especially those who celebrate Christmas. This Christmas card is sponsor by Obriens, a local catering company back in 2012. Vintage Draining Ladle

Image
I found this rare and beautiful draining ladle which estimates to be about 40 years old. The condition of the item is still new. One interesting fact about this vintage kitchenware is that, the handle is made from solid bamboo unlike the ones we see today. This utensil always reminds me about having a piping hot noodle soup as the draining ladle is commonly used to scoop up the noodles from the soup and drying them. The draining part is made from stainless steel and it is securely tighten to the bamboo handle. This draining ladle measures 55 cm in length. It is good to have this as a collection item if you want to decorate your kitchen or dinning room in a vintage way. You can try to hang them up on the wall or pull them lying down flat on the display shelf.
