Charcoal Iron restoration

Restoration is part of a job of every antique collector. Infact, this is my first restoration project which I decided to do after getting advice from my fellow collectors on how to restore this antique iron.

This iron wasn't kept well as you can see in the picture below, there were a lot of damages. This iron is also pitted, which means that it is not made from 100% brass and there is a small presence of other impurities present in the brass mixture. There is also some green colour staining around the iron.

The wooden handle of the iron is also broken. The damaged was due to the water vapor from the hot charcoal which condense on the wood, and caused the wood to slowly break apart. The hook of the iron is also missing. The iron rod in the iron is also heavily rusted and broken in the inside.

As for now, I bought a can of Brasso, a tube of Autosol and 120 sandpaper. My plan is first to polish up the iron and also to make it shinny again. Next is to fix the wood using wood glue and screw it. Follow by replacing the missing handle and replacing the iron rod which holds the top and the body together.
