Governors Of Malaysian Banknote

From the day of Malaysia's independence day until today in 2019, there is a current total of 9 governors of Bank Negara Malaysia. These governors sign various series of the Malaysian banknotes.

Tan Sri William Howard Wilcox (January 1959 to July 1962)

The first on the list is Tan Sri William Howard Wilcox also in short, W. H. Wilcox. He is a British man who came to Malaysia in 1958 and his duty was to be a banking adviser to the Government of Malaya. A year later, he became the first governor of Bank Negara Tanah Melayu which was the old name before it was change to Bank Negara Malaysia. 


Tun Ismail Mohamed Ali (July 1962 to July 1980)
In 1962, W. H. Wilcox, handled his duty to Tun Ismail Mohamed Ali who was the first Malaysian governor of Bank Negara Malaysia. Tun Ismail is also known for his integrity character who is always on time. His signatures is found on the first series of Malaysia banknote which was issued in 1967. Tun Ismail, have worked in Bank Negara for 18 years.




Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Taha (July 1980 to June 1985)

Before joining Bank Negara Malaysia in 1980, Abdul Aziz Taha had a career in banking. In 1969, he joined the bank under the role of an assistant manager of the investment and accounting department. He is also known for his stewardship attitude and a low profile man. His signatures appeares on the first series and second series of Malaysian banknote. He also introduced the second series of Malaysian banknote in 1982 as well as the 500$ banknote. 




Tan Sri Jaafar Hussein (June 1985 to May 1994)

During the late 80's, there was a recession that happened, but the recession was weathered by Bank Negara Malaysia. Jaafar Hussein also make a worldly-wise and a mature financial system for Malaysia during his time of service. In 1989, he introduced the second series of Malaysia coins which came into circulation on 4th September 1989. In the mid of 1993, he introduces the term "RM" which stands for ringgit Malaysia which could be found on the 1 Ringgit coin from 1993 onwards and 3rd series and 4th series of Malaysian banknote. In mid 1993, the 1$ banknotes was discontinued and was replace by the 1 Ringgit coin.




Tan Sri Ahmad Mohd Don (May 1994 to August 1998)

During his time, he enforce the Strategic Plan 1995 to 2000. He also signs the Malaysia 2nd series banknotes and he introduces the new 3rd series banknotes. In the 3rd series Malaysian banknote, his signature appears to be vertical on the side of the banknote. At that point of time on 5th February 1996, he introduces the new 2 ringgit banknote which is still legal tender now but rarely used. In the 3rd series of Malaysia banknote only 2 ringgit, 10 ringgit, 50 ringgit and 100 ringgit bare his vertical side signature. There was also a special RM 50 banknote which was signed by him to commemorate the 1998 commonwealth games held in Kuala Lumpur.




Tan Sri Ali Abul Hassan Sulaiman (15th September 1998 to 30th April 2000)

In the beginning time of his service in 1998, Asia was hit by a massive financial crisis and it was at it's peak. I remember the financial crisis at that time, all share markets were down by a sum and a lot of people were in debt and many under development properties were abandoned. With his knowledge, he decided to take this proactive and business-friendly policy to help recover the economy. His aim was to improve Malaysia's economy after the crisis and to attract in more foreign investments into the country. Soon in May 2000, he retired from his job.

His signature also appears vertical on the side of the banknote of the 2 ringgit, 10 ringgit, 50 ringgit and 100 ringgit in the 3rd series banknotes. The 2 ringgit and 10 ringgit banknotes bearing his signature was introduced on 15th January 1999, for the 50 ringgit banknote it was on 6th April 1999 and the 100 ringgit note on 1 June 1999. On 27th September 1999, the 5 ringgit paper note was introduced under his signature. 




Tan Sri Dato Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz (1st May 2000 to 30th April 2016)

Dr Zeti who is born in Johor Bahru, was the first female governor for Bank Negara Malaysia. Before working as a governor, she has been working as an economist. Over the years in her service, she implemented a few new policies to move the organisation ahead. On 8th November 2000, the 3rd series of 1 Ringgit banknote was introduced. and the 5 ringgit polymer series was introduced on 26th October 2004 which provides better security features. 

On 21st December 2007, there was a new commemorative 50 Ringgit banknote was introduce to commemorate Malaysia's 50th Anniversary of independence. There was a 50th independence logo  appeared on the top right of the reverse side of the note and the dates "1957 to 2007" on the reverse side of the banknote. The normal 50 ringgit notes which bears the 4th series of the banknotes came into circulation on 15th July 2009 bearing the prefix AF.

The 4th series of the 1, 5,10, 20 and 100 ringgit banknote was issued on 16th July 2012. The new 20 ringgit banknote was reintroduced back to circulation. 




Tan Sri Muhammad bin Ibrahim (1st May 2016 to 15th June 2018)

Graduating from various university such as Harvard Kennedy School and University of Malaya, He began his career in Bank Negara Malaysia in 1984. Over the years, he when up in rank and became the governor of Bank Negara Malaysia. In 2017, 60 ringgit and 600 ringgit banknote were introduce to commemorate 60 years of Malaysia independence. The 600 ringgit banknote is currently the world largest banknote in the world.

Dato Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus (1st July 2018 to present)

She began off her career in 1987 in Bank Negara Malaysia. She became the governor of Bank Negara of Malaysia on 1st July 2018. Up to date today, she hasn't sign any banknotes yet.
