TV license
Last time in the 60s and 70s during my parent’s era, owning
a Television was really a luxury item. Not just purchasing a television set was
expensive but also the television license was expensive too. In Malaysia and
Singapore, the television license was introduced back in the early 60s. Every
house owner who owns a television set must apply for a television license. The
best part was the license doesn’t limit to the number of televisions sets you
own at home.
In Malaysia, the license back then was printed on a pink
coloured A5 paper showing the details of the types of television you owned. The
TV license shown below is from my late grandfather’s collection and it is dated
back in the year 1971.
The price of the TV license in Malaysia has not changed at
all. The price still remains at 24$ from the early 60s to the time they abolish
on 31st Dec 1999.
In Singapore, the TV license continues until the 31st
December 2010. Back in then in the 80s in Singapore, different types of television
have different license pricing. If you own a coloured CRT television, you will
be charged higher as compare to an old fashion black and white CRT TV.
